We visit Chelsea, The Upper East Side, and Tribeca, and see art from a great variety of disciplines including painting, sculpture, drawings, prints, photography, installations, video, and performance.&nbsp; Exhibitions are selected from various styles and periods, with an emphasis on nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first century art.&nbsp; Biographical information about the artists is given to help you understand what prompted them to create their art.&nbsp; Interpretations and meanings are offered and artworks are placed in the context of the philosophy of their time as well as their social and political milieu.&nbsp; Clear explanations are given as to how works of art are made and how they function in the marketplace. Howard Rosenthal Howard Rosenthal received his Bachelor’s degree from the Rhode Island School of Design and his Master’s degree from Pratt Institute.&nbsp; He launched his career by working for the Museum of Modern Art and went on to teach at Connecticut College, Columbia University, Stony Brook University, and the Graduate School of Pratt Institute.&nbsp; He has also lectured for The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Concordia College, Roger Williams University, The University of Connecticut, the The Toledo Museum of Art. &nbsp; Howard is a practicing artist.&nbsp; He has been the subject of one-person exhibitions in the United States and Asia, and has been including in group exhibitions in the United States and Europe.&nbsp; A film about his largest sculpture, “Sky Disk”, can be seen here. Howard began conducting art tours for the Brandeis University National Women’s Committee in 2001. He founded Art Tours of New York in 2002. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza, and the Education Building.&nbsp; Together, these buildings comprise the largest concentration of state government office buildings in the western hemisphere. &nbsp;We will examine monumental outdoor sculptures by major artists including Alexander Calder, Claes Oldenburg, Tony Smith, Clement Meadmore, George Rickey, George Sugarman, Forrest Myers, and Francois Stahly that grace the plaza. Professor Rosenthal will discuss the aesthetics, materials, philosophies, and politics involved in these artworks and buildings.&nbsp; Important biographical information will be offered to help us understand what motivated and inspired the artists and architects. He will discuss how the artists made their work. Do you know who was the first artist in the western tradition to create an all-over drip painting, or who was the first artist to create a kinetic sculpture?
